Por muito tempo, a narratologia foi sinônima de “análise estrutural da narrativa”, a tal ponto que nos habituamos a tomar uma coisa pela outra. É comum pensar que estudar a narrativa é analisar suas propriedades formais, o que não acontece por acaso: no século passado, o formalismo russo, o estruturalismo francês, a nova crítica americana, o pós-estruturalismo, em conjunto colaboraram para fazer da atenção à forma do texto o objeto central da disciplina. Por isso, talvez surpreenda o surgimento de uma nova narratologia, fundamentada em paradigmas epistemológicos diferentes. Se antes a linguística estrutural fora a referência, tem-se agora o diálogo com a psicologia cognitiva, a filosofia da mente, a neurociência, a antropologia evolutiva. A composição textual passa a ser compreendida como um conjunto ordenado de estímulos informacionais, que produz efeitos na mente do leitor. Elementos formais são descritos pelos efeitos mentais que provocam; a atenção à imanência do texto dá lugar à interação entre texto e leitor. Inspirada pela nova narratologia, esta chamada convida a discutir a interface entre literatura e cognição, em sua ampla variedade de aspectos: os estímulos dos textos à atenção, à percepção e à memória do leitor, para efeitos de suspense, indexação semântica, juízo valorativo, reação emocional; o estímulo à percepção, raciocínio, intuição, consciência e julgamento; o estímulo à atenção, retenção e recordação da informação, ao raciocínio, à resolução de problemas, e à formação de imagens mentais – entre outros tópicos possíveis. A pesquisa empírica vai do processamento visual da escrita à ativação neurológica da memória, numa consiliência com a psicologia, a linguística cognitiva, a evolução cultural humana, a filosofia da mente, a neurociência da leitura, o que projeta o estudo da narrativa e da ficção a um espectro ampliado de possibilidades. É uma área pujante, em processo de expansão e aprimoramento, e por isso é importante cultivar, no Brasil, um público preparado para conhecer essas ideias. São modos de teorização da literatura e da ficção que esta chamada pretende colocar em discussão, convidando a comunidade acadêmica a discutir o novo campo de pesquisa.

Call for papers for the coming issue of Eutomia

 For a long time, narratology was as a synonym of "structural analysis of narrative", to such extent that we became are used to taking one thing for the other. It is common to think that to study narrative is to analyze its formal properties, which does not happen by chance: in the last century, Russian formalism, French structuralism, American new criticism, post-structuralism, together made the attention to the texts’ formal properties the central object of the field. For this reason, the emergence of a new narratology, based on different epistemological paradigms, may come as a surprise. If structural linguistics used to be the reference, there is now a dialogue with cognitive psychology, philosophy of mind, neuroscience, evolutionary anthropology. Textual composition is now understood as an ordered set of informational stimuli, which produces effects in the reader's mind. Formal elements are described by the mental effects they provoke; attention to the immanence of the text gives way to the interaction between the text and the reader. Inspired by the new narratology, this call for papers invites discussion of the interface between literature and cognition, in its wide variety of aspects: the textual stimulation of the reader’s attention, perception, and memory, in order to elicit suspense, semantic indexing, evaluative judgment, emotional reaction; the stimulation of perception, reasoning, intuition, awareness, and judgment; the stimulation of attention, retention and recall of information, reasoning, problem solving, and the formation of mental images – among other topics. Empirical research ranges from the visual processing of writing to the neurological activation of memory, in a consilience with psychology, cognitive linguistics, human cultural evolution, philosophy of mind, and the neuroscience of reading, opening the study of narrative and fiction to an expanded realm of possibilities. It is a thriving area, in process of expansion and improvement, and it is important to cultivate, in Brazil, a public prepared to debate these ideas. We therefore invite the academic community to discuss this new field of research, with its new modes of theorizing literature and fiction.

The contributions can be submitted in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish.
