Resumo:

I understand identity is being fundamental in four ways: (1) it is assumed in every conceptual system; (2) it is needed in the characterization of individuals; (3) it is not possible to define it, and (4) it is required for the intelligibility of quantification. In a recent paper, Décio Krause and Jonas Arenhart have challenged identity?s fundamentality, and resisted all of the considerations I offered in its support. In what follows, I will examine the most significant of their complaints and provide a defense of the centrality – in fact, the fundamentality – of identity.
