The praise of unselfish love in The Works of Love
Vol 6, No 3 (2005) • Filosofia Unisinos - Unisinos Journal of Philosophy
Autor: Alvaro L. M. Valls
Resumo:
After summarizing the circumstances of the present research and translation of Kierkegaard in Brazil, this article analyses, on the basis of the book Works of Love (1847), the conditions and motivations of a possible Christian praise of love. The paradox to be elucidated is that generally “doing is better than talking about”, but in the specific case of Christian love the very praise of love, when correctly made, already constitutes a work of love. The true discourse on Christian love presupposes abnegation and a loving attitude, although the latter should perhaps be challenged, following a typical procedure of the master of irony.
