Newton, Malebranche and the inverted proportion of Voltaire
Vol 18, No 1 (2017) • Filosofia Unisinos - Unisinos Journal of Philosophy
Autor: João Carlos Lourenço Caputo
Resumo:
This study aims to investigate the idea of God present in Voltaire’s texts from the Cirey period and to compare them with a specific set of texts from his old age period, in order to note the nuances and changes regarding this central concept of the author’s metaphysics. In this process, we will note how Newton’s philosophy was supplanted by that of Malebranche as Voltaire’s main source. We will also examine the consequences this change will cause in Voltaire’s metaphysical theory.
