Resumo:

Neste artigo, discutiremos como o filósofo medieval João Buridan (séc. XIV) aborda a natureza e funções da alma. Primeiramente, discutiremos como Buridan classifica o estudo da alma enquanto ciência, passando, em seguida, para a análise da alma humana e suas funções. Buridan adota uma teoria particular acerca da alma, que tenta conciliar as tradições aristotélica e médica. Isso inclui uma abordagem funcionalista da alma e uma reinterpretação da tradição aristotélica principalmente com relação à noção de sentido interno, o qual é abordado também em uma perspectiva fisiológica, com a discussão da sua localização no corpo humano e sua função no processo de percepção.

Abstract:

In this paper, we will discuss how the medieval philosopher John Buridan (14th century) approaches the nature and functions of the soul. First, we will discuss how Buridan classifies the study of the soul as a science, and then, we will discuss his analysis of the human soul. Buridan developed a theory about the soul, which tries to reconcile Aristotelian and medical traditions. This includes a functionalist approach to the soul and a reinterpretation of the Aristotelian tradition mainly in relation to the notion of internal sense, which is also approached from a physiological perspective, discussing its location in the human body and its role in the perception process.
