Resumo:

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar e analisar suscintamente os elementos centrais da teoria da gastrea de Ernst Haeckel. O núcleo de tal teoria se constitui da relação entre duas noções principais, a saber, a noção de forma gastrular e de metazoário. A teoria da gastrea é um conjunto de formulações que visa estabelecer uma definição de metazoário a partir da noção de forma gastrular. O argumento central da teoria da gastrea articula essas duas noções para organizar a partir de estudos de embriologia comparativa uma visão geral da história evolutiva do reino animal. A noção de forma gastrular define o metazoário como o organismo que apresenta na sua ontogênese um estágio embrionário cuja forma possui como uma de suas características fundamentais a posse de duas camadas germinativas. Com a definição de metazoário, Haeckel estabeleceu os critérios para a distinção entre os verdadeiros animais (metazoários) e os protozoários, de modo a precisar os limites entre o reino animal e o reino dos protistas.

Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to present and briefly analyze the central elements of Ernst Haeckel's theory of gastrea. The core of this theory is the relationship between two main notions, namely, the notion of gastrular form and of metazoan. The theory of gastrea is a set of formulations that aims to establish a definition of metazoan from the notion of gastrular form. The central argument of gastrea theory articulates these two notions in order to organize, from comparative embryology studies, an overview of the evolutionary history of the animal kingdom. The notion of gastrular form defines the metazoan as the organism that presents in its ontogenesis an embryonic stage whose form has as one of its fundamental characteristics the possession of two germ layers. With the definition of metazoan, Haeckel established the criteria for the distinction between true animals (metazoans) and protozoa, in order to clarify the limits between the animal kingdom and the kingdom of the protists.
