Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to bring out the conceptual connections underlying different models of democracy, that of “participatory democracy” corresponding to the “liberty of the ancients”, and that of “representative democracy”, corresponding to the “liberty of the moderns”. The ancient, Athenian, model is horizontal in character, whereas the modern model is vertical, from citizen to government, and they are founded on a different understanding of freedom and equality. Today we are more equal when it comes to the less relevant things of our daily lives (homogenization of our ways of life), but when it comes to what is fundamentally important we are more unequal (fragmentation and social exclusion); “deliberative democracy” proponents call for more “participation” as a way to face the gap between reality and democratic ideals.

A Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia (RPF) foi fundada em 1945 por Domingos Maurício, SJ; Cassiano Abranches, SJ; Severiano Tavares, SJ e Diamantino Martins, SJ. É uma publicação trimestral da Axioma - Publicações da Faculdade de Filosofia.

A RPF, sendo de inspiração cristã, tem por missão a publicação de artigos inéditos de reconhecido mérito, aceitando textos de qualquer horizonte de pensamento, em qualquer área de filosofia, escritos nas principais línguas europeias (português, inglês, francês, alemão, espanhol e italiano).
