Abstract:

Contemporary western political societies rely on a certain comprehension of human life as the valorative epicentre of the respective legal system. However, the notion of human dignity within today’s constitutional democracies is quite problematic, due to permanent questioning of the idea of rationality as the essence of the humans. In order to develop an adequate understanding of the constitutional principle invoked, we need to investigate the historical line leading to Immanuel Kant whose moral doctrine – referring to the intrinsic worth of human existence – represents a common bullwark for current ethical and political philosophy. Consequently, we will take seriously the axiological charge which underpins the constitutional State aiming at pointing an appropriate hermeneutical path that can make possible the reactivation of a never-ending interpretive process of such a crucial category of our political context. A pluri-trans-disciplinary approach will be privileged as an adequate response to the cultural hyper-complexity challenging our notion of human dignity within secularized and multicultural political societies.
